Where the inspiration happens

06.11.09

As those of you who have been following the escapades of the House of Papier know, the inspiration for my designs come from the world of fashion. Including, magazines, designers, the details in clothing, color combinations, and so much more. But inspiration can really be found everywhere. I carry around a journal where ever I go to record my thoughts, ideas, and moments of inspiration.

Sometimes that inspiration comes while I’m sitting at my design table contemplating a new project,  but most times it comes when I am out and about. I’m in New York a couple of times a month and that is where I draw so much of my inspiration – especially when I’m on 7th Avenue in the garment district.

I know it sounds crazy, but I truly have a love affair with New York City. Every time I’m there my favorite CoCo Chanel quote comes to mind:

“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only; fashion is something in the air. It’s the wind that blows in the new fashion; you feel it coming, you smell it…in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

So in short, be aware of your surroundings and note the inspiration that lies in your daily comings and goings. Every designer has a muse, mine is Manhattan.

All the Best,
